Career Change, Relocation: French People Want Change

The French want change.

In July 2020, following the first lockdown, we sent a survey to a panel of our candidates (2,310 people).
The upheaval in daily life resulting from the health and economic crisis we have experienced for over a year has revealed a trend among the French. Our study shows that 80% of Shefferd network candidates surveyed expressed a desire for professional change or personal reorganization following the first lockdown.

Marc de Torquat, co-founder of Shefferd:

“Within the Shefferd network, many have acted on their desire for change over the past year, or more precisely since the first lockdown. We have observed several behaviors:

First, those who wanted to change their career. According to a BVA study, the desire for professional reconversion now concerns 1 in 2 French people. Among them, half have already started their reconversion or are in the process (22%)*. Others have only begun to gather information (26%). To succeed in this career change, many say they are ready to pursue training to improve their skills (76%).

Those who wished to leave Paris for the provinces (1 in 2 Parisian executives is considering regional mobility). Most waited to find the right professional opportunity before moving. 8%** of surveyed candidates left the Île-de-France region with a job opportunity lined up. More surprisingly, some candidates moved before even finding a new job in their new region. They represent 4% of those surveyed. This suggests either confidence in their ability to bounce back or a motivation to move to the provinces that has become an absolute priority. In any case, this trend has become commonplace. There is a redefinition of priorities and the meaning people wish to give to their lives. Work is no longer necessarily the only criterion at the top of the list.

Finally, there is a significant number of Île-de-France residents who are still eagerly awaiting news about their employer’s future remote work policy. Professional changes and migration movements are therefore far from over… slowly but surely. It is now up to companies, regions, and cities to prepare and adapt!”
