But is that really the case? What are the advantages and disadvantages for both employees and employers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marcdetorquat\/\">Marc de Torquat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lsanier\/\">Leslie Sanier<\/a>, recruitment experts, share their vision of remote work and what it represents in today&#8217;s workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\" data-rich-links=\"{&quot;per_n&quot;:&quot;Marc de Torquat&quot;,&quot;per_e&quot;:&quot;mdetorquat@shefferd.com&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;person&quot;}\">Marc de Torquat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, co-founder of Shefferd recruitment firm:<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We must distinguish between mandatory remote work for all employees of a company and remote work offered only to certain employees under exceptional circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remote work imposed on all employees is almost easier for a company to manage than one that must handle both options (remote and on-site work). It requires implementing common rules for everyone, with no equality or fairness issues arising.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, we have observed that some employees show signs of dissatisfaction and frustration after several months of full remote work. This is one of the reasons employees express a desire for change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remote work granted to a population\u2014who, in most cases, wish to relocate from Paris to the provinces\u2014is, in my opinion, an additional benefit a company can offer its employees or an attractive advantage for future talent. This would be an individual benefit, similar to a bonus, company car, phone, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For an employer, it is easier to propose or accept a remote work arrangement with an employee who has been with the company for several years and knows the teams, how it operates, its culture, and processes. It&#8217;s more difficult to consider for a newcomer who needs to prove themselves in an organization and to teams that are more challenging to discover remotely through telecommuting. With the famous coffee break\u2014so useful\u2014gradually disappearing, this requires creating a different kind of proximity, provided that <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">employees<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> give it time. This new model requires both employees and employers to think about new rules that enable access to these communication moments. This is a major challenge for maintaining company culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another question to consider concerns career development. Can an employee working full-time remotely continue to advance hierarchically within a company? The inability to train alongside a mentor or internal teams, combined with fewer face-to-face interactions with managers, can hinder their career progression.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The employer, hoping to solve their retention problem this way, will need to implement a very precise and more complex support program. Indeed, even though technologies exist for tracking employees&#8217; career management, measuring their sense of belonging to the company and its culture, and other monitoring tools, it remains difficult to monitor employee fulfillment and well-being remotely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In other words, in the short term, remote work is an advantage for the employee with relatively little impact on performance, provided they are well-versed in their role, familiar with their teams, and know the company.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, in the long term, as employee monitoring becomes more complex, the risk for the employer is accelerated turnover, with employees preferring to change companies to advance their careers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leslie Sanier, co-founder of Shefferd recruitment firm:<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Remote work is today a prerequisite for attracting new talent and an achievement for employees. It is therefore becoming established long-term in various forms\u2014one day, two days, mandatory or optional, full remote, anything is possible. It&#8217;s about building a new relationship of trust and work organization. Today, many French employees believe that the workplace is no longer what it was before. Often deserted, it no longer always meets employees&#8217; interaction needs and is no longer the place where company culture is built. Remote work offers employees both freedom and flexibility, but it has the perverse effect of &#8220;isolating&#8221; employees and dehumanizing the company. We don&#8217;t yet have enough hindsight to analyze the deeper effects; we understand that it works for some and not at all for others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a real issue in recruitment right now. Many candidates want to maintain their remote work rhythm (negotiated with their current employer) but struggle to find a new employer offering the same flexibility. We&#8217;re even seeing an increase in employees adopting freelance status on the market\u2014a status that meets this desired flexibility. A phenomenon to watch\u2014perhaps a reason for the talent shortage in permanent positions?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regarding compensation, so far in France, we haven&#8217;t observed changes related to work organization changes as seen in other countries where salary is sometimes indexed to location (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.francebleu.fr\/infos\/economie-social\/baisse-de-salaire-contre-teletravail-impossible-en-france-1629093695\">read more on the subject<\/a>). In France, the law states that compensation cannot be linked to work organization, and we see that nothing is yet truly defined regarding remote work. This new work rhythm impacts many other issues: offices, meal vouchers, transportation, benefits gained today\u2014should we reconsider them? The advantage of remote work doesn&#8217;t show up in salary (sometimes even to the employee&#8217;s disadvantage if they incur significant travel expenses when working away from their workplace) but rather in quality of life: the time saved not commuting, less stress, a more hybrid work schedule. Today, employers, in agreement with employees, are relatively free to establish the rules they wish within their organization.
